There is no place like home. To most people, home is a place where one experiences love, care, contentment, and togetherness. To me, it is more than that. Home is an island called Doong – unspoiled and unexplored. A perfect haven.
An island that is part of Bantayan Island, Cebu, Philippines, Doong can only be reached by pump boat, either from Hagnaya, San Remigio directly or from Bantayan mainland. It is a 2-hour trip from San Remigio but only a 45-minute trip from Bantayan Island.
According to the legend, the island is named after a big bird called Doong, which is already extinct. Doong Island has two barangays – Doong and Luyongbaybay, with a combined population of approximately 5,000. It is the biggest islet of Bantayan Island. Other neighboring islands are Hilotongan, Botigues, Lipayran, Mambacayao Gamay and Mamabacayao Dako.
A diesel-powered plant supplies electricity to Doong Island for eight (8) hours everyday, from 5:00 o’clock in the afternoon to 1:00 o’clock in the morning. The remaining hours are spent in perfect solitude – without electricity, without television. Communication, though, may be made through mobile phone, in some parts of the island where one can get a signal.
Fishing is the primary source of livelihood in Doong, as well as the whole island of Bantayan. A few island folks engage in seaweed farming.
Island life is slow-paced and peaceful. Bounty from the sea abound when the sea is placid. In fact, I always miss the savor of the fish “tinola”. The saying that you only miss a thing when you have lost it is so true. In the city, I can only taste the fish “tinola” from frozen fish and whew, what a difference in the taste...
Most importantly, the people of Doong never forgets their own. It is such a small, warm community where everybody knows each other. This is one island where you’ll never have to worry if you get stranded because the people are very hospitable.
If you want a totally remote vacation getaway, try going to Doong. Not only is the island beautiful, the trip will definitely be a real adventure!
